Das h\u00e4ngt damit zusammen, dass sich unvorstellbar viele Mikroben auf unserem Planeten tummeln. Es sind etwa 5 x 10<sup>30<\/sup>&nbsp;Zellen. Zum Vergleich: Im Universum gibt es 10<sup>22<\/sup>&nbsp;Sterne. Entsprechend riesig ist der mikrobielle Genpool, also die Summe aller Gene der Mikroben. Dieser Genpool ist st\u00e4ndig in Bewegung. Gene werden durch Mutation ver\u00e4ndert, mikrobielle DNA liegt in der Natur \u00fcberall herum. Sie wird aufgenommen, auf N\u00fctzlichkeit \u201egepr\u00fcft\u201c und so entstehen st\u00e4ndig neue Varianten von Mikroben. Diese haben f\u00fcr ihre Entstehung und Verbreitung heute viel bessere M\u00f6glichkeiten als noch vor 100 Jahren. Es gibt viel mehr Menschen und Nutztiere und damit mehr dicht von Mikroben besiedelte Verdauungstrakte, es gibt Kl\u00e4ranlagen, Biotonnen, mit Antibiotika kontaminierte Abw\u00e4sser der Krankenh\u00e4user und Chemieabw\u00e4sser. Alle diese Bedingungen erzeugen Selektionsdruck und treiben die mikrobielle Evolution in neue Richtungen.
